How China is becoming a leader in smart city development

With the development and implementation of new generation information technologies including internet of things, cloud computing, big data, and artificial intelligence, Chengdu, the capital city of Sichuan Province in Southwest China, is becoming a smart city.

During the Beijing Winter Olympics, Chengdu produced 2,539 intelligent street lamps, showcasing the city’s technological prowess.

The lamps were created by Chengdu-based Sichuan Huati Illumination Technology Co Ltd and feature WiFi, LED panels, charging stations, solar power generation, and energy storage systems in addition to lighting services. They perform a variety of tasks, such as intelligent transportation, 5G communication, and environmental monitoring.

In Chengdu, the lamps are also in use. Huati Lighting Technology have created a number of smart city application scenarios and services based on the lamps. Its smart roadside parking system and smart greenway system are both implemented in Chengdu’s Shuangliu district and Jincheng Greenway, respectively.

A growing number of intelligent technology products and smart city application scenarios have been implemented as part of the Chengdu municipal government’s plan to create a “Smart Chengdu,” transforming the way that people live and work.

Eight autopilot taxis from the first batch have been operating in demonstration mode in the Singapore-Sichuan Hi-tech Innovation Park since July 2022, giving residents access to intelligent driving.

Micronet Union Technology (Chengdu) Co Ltd and China Mobile have constructed the first “5G Smart Factory” demonstration project in Sichuan province in Chengdu’s Xindu neighborhood. This facility achieves innovation in intelligent manufacturing with the implementation of 5G smart applications.

The Grain and Oil Modern Agriculture Park in Dayi county offers one-stop services for farmers in terms of farm management, agricultural supply purchases, and operation of agricultural machinery through the digital management mode of “drone + intelligent agriculture.”

The digital infrastructure in Chengdu is being improved to aid in the creation of the smart city.

The creation of Chengdu’s smart city will benefit from the National Supercomputing Center, the first facility of its sort in western China. The city’s numerous industries will be supported in their intelligent upgrading by the Chengdu Intelligent Computing Center, the largest artificial intelligence computing facility in Southwest China.

An awareness center for smart cities was constructed in Chengdu in July. Through perception terminals, communication networks, and administration platforms, it will create a smart city perception system.
