IBM, David Clarke Cause announce winners of 5th annual Call for Code Global Challenge

The winner of the fifth annual Call for Code Global Challenge, which invited innovators worldwide to help accelerate sustainability and combat climate change with open source-powered technology, was today announced by Call for Code founding partner IBM, creator David Clark Cause, charitable partner United Nations Human Rights, and program affiliate, the Linux Foundation. This year’s winner was GardenMate, who developed an app that utilizes IBM Watson to link gardeners with extra food to those in need.

IBM’s support for Call for Code is a continuation of the company’s effort to give businesses the tools they need to create effective sustainability solutions. Developers may take use of open source-powered programs like Red Hat OpenShift, IBM Cloud, and IBM’s AI portfolio, which includes IBM Watson Assistant, by giving them access to cutting-edge hybrid cloud and AI technologies. Since the challenge’s inception, a community of 500,000 developers and problem solvers from 180 different countries have joined in.

GardenMate will receive $200,000 USD in addition to help from the Linux Foundation to open source their application and assistance from IBM Ecosystem Partners to deploy their solution.

TransXEnergy was selected as the winner of the IBM and Clinton Global Initiative University’s Call for Code University Edition by Chelsea Clinton, vice chair of The Clinton Foundation. TransXEnergy, an auction and blockchain-based peer-to-peer energy trading platform, was created by a team of student developers from Monash University Malaysia. It can connect buyers and sellers through a mobile application and gathers available energy data from sources like electric vehicles and smart homes. TransXEnergy is the winner of the Call for Code University and will get a $15,000 reward.
